History, culture and prominent visitors

Every town at the Amalfi Coast has a fascinating and interesting history to look back on. Most places have roots that go back to the age of the Etruscans. Once the Amalfi Coast was the home of fishermen and farmers, who had to endure frequent assaults from the Barbarians, Saracens, Ottomans as well as attacks from the Romans.

Of course there have passed also peaceful times in history, when Amalfi and the Republic of Amalfi flourished from its independence and played an important role in world history.

This time of peace was marked by intense trade relations with the central and oriental towns of the Mediterranean Sea. One example for the important role Amalfi played in the region are the sea codes that were determined here and  internationally in force throughout the Medieval Age.

After these centuries of glory, a dark period of time followed.

From the 18th century on the Amalfi Coast revived to former glory and flourished in arts and culture. The Amalfi Coast was discovered by artists that moved there and consequently made the coast famous all around the world. Amongst the prominent artists and stars that came to Amalfi or frequently visited the coast were Richard Wagner, Greta Garbo, Jacqueline Kennedy, Fellini, Rossellini, Anna Magnani, Richard Doelker, Irene Kowaliska, Elle Schwarz, Gianni Agnelli, Prinzessin Margret of England and Maurits Cornelis Escher, just to mention some of them.

The Amalfi Coast - a paradise for gourmets

Thanks to the historic connection to the Arab world many new techniques and modes of processing, as well as new food products were introduced to Amalfi’s population. Among the aliments that were imported from the Arab countries were eggplants, apricots and coffee. New techniques were applied for the paper production, the production of pasta and last but not least a more efficient, horizontal mill wheel.

The cuisine of the Amalfi coast is divers and bases on fresh local products. Here you can enjoy the wonderful taste of fresh caught fish. We also recommend to taste the specialty of the coast, the beautiful, freshly scenting lemons that are a crucial ingredient of many of the local, traditional dishes.

The Amalfi Coast does not only impress with the beautiful sea, but also with the wonderful mountain scenery with many interesting tacks through the wild romantic nature. The Amalfi Coast is unique in its history, its culture, its mountain and sea landscape and the beautiful arts and attracts visitors from all around the world.
